Motorcycle Touring Tips From RoadTrip
You chose a country that you thought would suit you, you carefully packed your luggage and your maps, you meticulously planned the route, but still the holiday is a disaster. Eight hours on a bike is a lifetime for inexperienced riders. As it turned out, being young and dumb while making rash decisions did not lead to me making the best choice because, as I quickly found out, I was woefully unprepared for a solo motorcycle road trip.
Your article has caused me to re-think my night-time travel plans (I`m one of those that enjoys riding at night)… but, alas, I should err on the side of safety here. Be warned, at this time of day there`s a lot of roadside traffic traveling at different speeds, often drifting onto the road oblivious to other vehicles.
Proper prep will give you peace of mind, but do keep checking things out after each day of riding. I always wear a camel-back hydration pack on long rides which I can sip on without stopping and removing the helmet. The only thing better than a motorcycle trip is a well planned motorcycle trip.
Feeling the wind blow as you ride is one of the most wonderful parts of riding, but two or three hours at 75 or 80 miles per hour gets exhausting. Having lived in the desert for a lot of years, this has always been a big one for me. Even if I`m going on a simple day ride, I always bring a small cooler and pack it with water and bring snacks along.
People often shy away from safety gear as they feel it is bulky and restrictive, or does not look cool but what they do not realize is that this safety gear can save them from a lot of pain and suffering. No list of touring bikes would be complete without Honda`s venerable Gold Wing.
Long riding hours can be tough on your bike, hoi an so make sure it`s serviced and in top condition before your tour. As they continue riding, they make more & more likeminded riders & learn a lot from them & their riding style. Enjoy your holidays - wear the right gear to protect yourself.
I liken motorcycle touring to roaming the Wild West; a cowboy riding his horse; carrying supplies, crossing states, finding a place to stay, soaking up the hospitality of a temporary home and then heading off next morning. Remember, you will be in your bike gear most of the day and spend very limited time in casuals in the evening.
